The organizing committee is chaired by event founder and for- mer Lewes Mayor Ted Becker, and includes the Lewes in Bloom co-chairs and founder, a representative from City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission, the Lewes Histor- ical Society and the Zwaanendael Museum. This year Lewes in Bloom funded the purchase of 31,000 tulips and 5,000 spring bulbs that were planted in fall 2023 by members of Lewes in Bloom. The timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates can increase the probability that the dates of the cel- ebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming! The event dates span three weekends. The locations of the plantings will be identified on the map produced in association with the celebration. More than 100 varieties will be on display. Tiptoe To The Tulips Map: The event organizers created the Tiptoe To The Tulips Map that will be available in late March at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center located in the historic Fisher-Martin House in Zwaanendael Park. The visitor center is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Copies of the map will be available at brochure boxes throughout the historic commercial district. The map lists more than 20 locations where the bulbs were planted. It also has a schedule of activities associated with the Tulip Celebration. Tulip Sale: On March 29 & 30 Lewes in Bloom will be selling tulips at the Bank Street Plaza on Second Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (or until they sell out). History in Bloom Walking Tours: The Lewes Historical Society and Lewes in Bloom are partnering to offer walking tours on April 1st & 2nd at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The tours will be led by a historic guide and will pro- vide information on Lewes’ rich maritime history. A knowl- edgeable guide from Lewes in Bloom will be on the tour to point out the multiple tulip varieties found around Lewes. The tours begin at the Cannonball House’s back garden, be- hind 118 Front Street. The tour cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Purchase tickets at www.histori- clewes.org/visit/tours/html. Floral demonstrations and tulip sales: Ken Norman, owner/designer at Floral Inspirations, located on the beach side of the canal at 524 E. Savannah Road, in the shops un- der the Beacon Motel, will be hosting demonstrations on Friday and Saturday, April 7th & 8th from 1 – 3 p.m. Spring Geranium Sale: Benefits the GFWC Zwaanen- dael Women’s Club’s Community Service Programs. She loves flying them, she loves mak- ing them and she loves selling them. “It is great when we get some- one in who has been out with their 2-year-old flying and they are excited because it actually went up,” she said. “That is the best feeling.” Webster is owner of Rehoboth Toy and Kite, located at 70 Re- hoboth Avenue (across Rehoboth Avenue from their previous lo- cation) and on the boardwalk at 1 Virginia Avenue. For the 30th year, the store is planning a Fun Day with the Easter Bunny on the Saturday before Easter, March 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it is free. Activities will take place at the 1 Virginia Avenue location on the boardwalk. The day will include free food, fun, prizes, an Easter egg hunt, drinks and candy and the Easter Bunny himself! There will be free pictures with the Easter Bunny, free kite making, games and free refreshments and an Easter egg hunt beginning at noon. “You can teach math and geometry with kite flying,” Webster said. “In history, you can study the origin of kites and of flying. “You can study how the shape of the kite affects its flying, you can study flight aerodynamics, wind and weather, on the computer you can do internet research and design and in language arts, you can write poetry about kites.” But of course, kite flying is not all about education. “It is a great activity,” Webster said. “It does not cost a lot and makes for really good family time. It is also good to do by yourself.” For more information, call Rehoboth Toy and Kite at 302-227- 6996 or visit www.rehobothkite.com. The downtown of Milford is looking forward to welcoming everyone for a day of family fun! Downtown Milford’s Bug and Bud Festival started in 2004 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the ladybug being named Delaware’s state bug. After reading an article about state trees, flowers and bugs, the children of the second- grade class from Milford’s LuLu Ross Elementary School asked their teacher, Mrs. Molly Brown Rust, if Delaware had a state bug. The answer was no. Thus began a year-long ef- fort by the class, culminating on April 25, 1974 with the state legislature voting to designate the ladybug as the state bug by virtue of its agricultural usefulness and the outstanding class presentations to the legislature.
